Creating Safe Schools

Your silence will not protect you.
- Audre Lorde

It is our goal to foster safer schools for the LGBT youth living in Brevard.  Our chapter has been successful in creating partnerships with local school officials, administrators, teachers and students to work towards putting an end to bullying, creating an inclusive curriculum and providing much needed services for LGBT youth.

It has been proven that when students don't feel safe at school, they are unable to obtain the quality education they deserve.  The numbers speak for themselves.

97% of students in public high schools report regularly hearing homophobic remarks from their peers

53% of students report hearing homophobic comments made by school staff

80% of prospective teachers report negative attitudes toward gay and lesbian people.

75% of guidance counselors harbor negative feelings toward gay and lesbian people.

45% of gay males and 20% of lesbians report having experienced verbal harassment and/or physical violence
as a result of their sexual orientation during high school.

*According to a recent GLSEN national survey

I have come to believe, over and over again, that what is important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood.
